SOCIAL PERCEPTIONS AND COMMUNICATIONAL STRATEGIES IN RISK PREVENTION. A NATIONAL SECURITY PERSPECTIVE (REACT)
Project supported by a grant of the Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research and Innovation, CNCS – UEFISCDI
Implementation period
October 1st, 2015 – September 30th, 2017
Aims & Scop
Risk perception focuses on subjective judgments that people make about the characteristics and severity of a particular risk. Starting from the assumption that the risk perceived is a complex concept, defined as the possibility that a negative occurrence takes place and whose perception differs from one individual to the next, our research project proposes the use of qualitative research methods in order to measure and define Romanians’ knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding national security risks.
The purpose of this research project is to improve the practice of risk management and risk communication at national level, by helping security professionals to develop efficient communication strategies and communicate more effectively with their target audiences (Romanian society) in accordance with their risk perception.
This research will contribute to the improvement of early warning systems in the field of national security as well as to the improvement of the decision-making process. Moreover, a good knowledge of security risks and of the social perception on this risks is an essential prerequisite in building efficient communication strategies, that can in their turn contribute to the reduction of the population’s vulnerability and to an increased resilience towards national security risks.
